Functional neurology and chiropractic care

Concussion and balance care that starts with its limits

Keystone is a small practice for adults with lingering symptoms after a concussion, or with dizziness and balance concerns. We test how your eyes, balance and neck work together, then build a plan with you. It does not cure a disease, and it works alongside your physician.

Scope

What this care can and cannot do

Functional neurology is an exam-and-exercise approach to how your eyes, balance and movement work together. It is not a treatment for a disease, and we say so before your first visit.

  • What we do

Your chiropractor looks at how these systems are working today, then plans exercises and care from what the exam shows.

    • Test eye movements, balance and coordination

    • Check how your neck and spine move

    • Write an exercise plan you can follow at home

    • Recheck on a schedule we set with you

    • Send a summary to your physician if you ask us to

  • What we do not do

Some things belong to your physician, and some to the emergency room. We keep to our part.

    • Act as a treatment for a disease

    • Replace the physician who diagnosed your concussion

    • Promise a result or a number of visits

    • Manage your medicines

    • Care for sudden or severe symptoms

  • A sudden severe headache or neck pain, dizziness, trouble speaking or seeing, new weakness or numbness, numbness in the groin or saddle area (between the legs and buttocks), or new bladder or bowel trouble needs emergency care now. Call 911 or go to an emergency room.

The assessment

What an assessment looks like

About 75 minutes, in this order.

  1. 01

    Step 1: We listen first

Your chiropractor asks what you have noticed, what you want back and what your physician has told you. Bring any notes you have.

  2. 02

Step 2: Eye-movement and balance tests

Simple tests with a penlight, a target and a balance pad. You can stop any test at any point.

  3. 03

Step 3: A neck and spine exam

We check how your neck and back move and where they are tender.

  4. 04

Step 4: A plan you can read

You leave with your findings in plain words, a short exercise list and a date to recheck. If something needs a physician first, we say so.

Home exercises

Most of the plan is practice you repeat at home

Eye-tracking, head-turn and standing-balance drills are short, written down and shown to you in the room. We change them at each recheck and drop what doesn't suit you.

  • Gaze and eye-tracking drills

  • Standing balance on firm and soft surfaces

  • Walking and head-turn practice

  • A written list you can keep

Questions

Before you book

What happens at my first visit?

Your chiropractor listens first, then tests your eye movements, balance and coordination and checks how your neck and spine move. You leave with your findings in plain words and a written plan. The visit takes about 75 minutes.

Is this care safe?

Exams and exercises are low risk, and some tests can bring on brief dizziness or tiredness, so you can stop at any point. Hands-on care for the neck carries rare serious risks, which your doctor explains before any adjustment. If you have a sudden severe headache or neck pain, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking or seeing, call 911 before booking.

How many visits will I need?

Your chiropractor sets a plan after the exam and rechecks it as you go. We don't promise a number of visits or a date for any result, and results vary from person to person.

Do you take my insurance?

We bill health plans for visits your plan covers, and plans differ a lot on what they pay. Our care coordinator checks your benefits before your first visit. How fees work explains each step.

What if I don't use insurance?

You pay at the visit, and your chiropractor tells you the fee for each part of it first. You have the right to a good faith estimate in writing before your first visit. Ask us, and we can give you an itemized receipt to send to your plan.
